| Kevin Phillips' signing from Watford in the summer of 1997 for £325,000 must go down as one of the best buys of all-time. Since then he has scored at an incredible rate for the Black Cats at a ratio of almost a goal a game.Possessing blistering pace and good heading ability, despite his lack of height, he's forged a brilliant partnership with Niall Quinn.In 1997/98, his first season with Sunderland, he broke Brian Clough's 36-year-old scoring record by netting 35 goals. The return included a run of nine consecutive home scoring games between November 1997 and March 1998. It was a difficult act to follow but Phillips netted a further 22 League goals in 1998/99.After earning a call-up for the England 'B' squad in April 1998, Phillips was awarded his first full cap in the April 1999 friendly in Hungary.Not only was Phillips the club's Player-of-the-Year for the 1999/2000 season but he was also the top scorer in the Premiership with 30 league goals. |
