| Stephane Henchoz |
Liverpool Born: 9/07/74 Hometown: Billens |
| Stephane Henchoz has Roy Hodgson to thank for not only introducing him to the Premiership in the 1997 close season, but for also giving him his first international cap.The big centre-back had been earning rave reviews in the Bundesliga with Hamburg when he was snapped up by Blackburn for £3million from under the noses of Manchester United.Henchoz was Hodgson's first signing at Ewood Park where he was a virtual ever-present in a successful and impressive season 1997-98.The following campaign proved disastrous, with Blackburn relegated to division one, despite Henchoz again excelling at the back. He took advantage of a clause in his contract that allowed him to leave the club under such circumstances, and Gerard Houllier was quick to swoop for the aerially dominant, intelligent Swiss stopper for £3.5million.His partnership alongside Sami Hyppia at the heart of the defence led to Liverpool having the best defensive record in the Premiership during the 1999/2000 season, conceding just 30 league goals, 15 less than eventual champions Manchester United. |
