Having served his football apprenticeship at Port Vale, the free-scoring midfielder earned a big-money move to Sheffield Wednesday but scarcely had time to settle at Hillsborough before returning home in a player plus cash exchange deal involving Guy Whittingham.A Villa man through and through, Ian is one of those players who rarely hits the headlines, an unsung hero appreciated by players and fans alike. That is not to say that he can't play when in possession, but that he is prepared to work tirelessly for the cause, as well as popping up with a steady supply of important goals.His 100% all-action style of play in the engine-room means that he picks up his fair share of yellow cards, but he can never be described as a dirty player. Season 1998/99 was interrupted by a series of niggling injuries but he battled on in typical gutsy fashion. |
