David Ginola
Aston Villa
Born: 1/25/67
Hometown: Gassin, France
Widely thought to be past his best when discarded by Kenny Dalglish at Newcastle, Ginola had a brilliant 1998/99 season winning both the Players' and News-writers Player of the Season awards.Following an uneasy time under Spurs boss George Graham the popular French star finally ended his White Hart Lane nightmare by signing a two-year contract for Villa.During the summer 2000 Ginola had rejected offers from clubs in both Turkey and America preferring to stay in the Premiership with Aston Villa.Although a hero with Spurs fans the gifted wide-man failed to convince the Tottenham manager of his usefulness to the team effort and his eventual transfer came as no surprise. When he first signed for Tottenham from Newcastle he was thought to be past his best but he had a brilliant first season at White Hart Lane in 1998/99 winning both the Players' and News-writers Player of the season awards.Very much a free spirit both on and off the field Ginola's exceptional close control and wonderful skills made him a big favourite with the fans who will recall his brilliant goal scored in the 1998/99 FA Cup game at Barnsley that highlighted a breathtaking individual season.Although he is often criticised for not tackling or tracking back Ginola's undoubted ability makes him a potential match-winner.
