| Everton captured the elegant Italian in the summer of 2000 after a season that had witnessed the tall and stylish left-back make a late and surprise comeback following a broken leg sustained against arch-rivals Sunderland last term. But at the end of the season he played in two of the final four games and defied the odds by making a rapid return to action. During his time at St James Park the former Inter Milan defender had a rather chequered spell and under Ruud Gullit he did not start a game for 14 months once the Dutchman had replaced Kenny Dalglish as the manager of Newcastle United.He was loaned out to Venezia for much of the 1998/99 season but returned to Tyneside and once Bobby Robson became the Toon boss he was back in favour but he was blighted with injuries and made only intermittent appearances.The problems while in the North East were a far cry from his time at Inter Milan where he played a big part in the club's run to the final of the UEFA Cup in 1997 when the Italians lost on penalties to the German side Schalke.But on his day the over-lapping flank play of the attacking defender can be both exciting and effective with his ability to produce pinpoint crosses and penetrative runs down the bye-line. |
