| A pelvic injury kept Cameron out of the Hearts' team for most of the 1998-99 campaign and manager Jim Jefferies has gone on record as saying he was the player the team missed most.Without the livewire midfielder, Hearts struggled for much of the season but when he returned the team's fortunes picked up.Scored the two goals against Dunfermline in May 1999 that ensured the club's survival in the top league.A penalty-kick expert, Cameron scored the opening goal from the spot in Hearts' Scottish Cup final win over Rangers in 1998 - after just 90 seconds of the kick-off.Signed from Raith Rovers in a £400,000 deal that took John Millar to Kirkcaldy, Cameron played in the final few matches of the 1995-96 season but missed the Scottish Cup final defeat by Rangers as he was ineligible. He won his first cap for Scotland against Germany in 1999, and has been made club captain.He scored his first international goal against Lithuania at Hampden and has since gone on to become an important member of Craig Brown's squad. |
