Alex Cleland
Everton
Born: 12/10/70
Hometown: Glasgow
Cleland was able to leave Rangers in the summer of 1998 on a free transfer under the Bosman ruling. He'd been very popular at Ibrox, spending over three seasons there following his move from Dundee United.A solid if unspectacular player, Walter Smith brought Cleland to Everton on the same day he was appointed manager at Goodison. At the start of the 1998/99 season, Cleland faced competition from John O'Kane, Tony Thomas and Graham Allen for the Everton right-back slot. By the end of the season he'd made the position his own.Cleland represented his country at Under-21 level, but has never been able to force his way into the full Scotland set-up.
