| Matthew Holland |
Ipswich Born: 4/11/74 Hometown: Bury |
| A man equally at home at the back or in midfield, it is as a central midfielder that Holland has earned rave reviews. The Ipswich player started his career at West Ham but never actually played a league game for the Hammers during a three-year stint. But a move to the South Coast to Bournemouth in 1995 is really where the utility man came to the notice of many top-flight clubs.Town boss George Burley was persuaded to pay £800,000 for the Lancashire-born player who quickly repaid his new manager's faith and soon became a vital cog in the Ipswich midfield. His never-say-die attitude also made him a fans favourite and he has been named the Supporters Player of the Year award on several occasions. The strong-running midfielder attacks the ball in a positive fashion whether defending or attacking and he is also strong in the air even though he is only 5ft 9in tall. |
