| Alun Armstrong |
Ipswich Born: 2/22/75 Hometown: Gateshead |
| Alun Armstrong was a regular scorer for Stockport County through the 1995-96 and 1996-97 seasons. His form attracted scouts from his native North East who were also impressed by his work-rate.In February 1998 Bryan Robson moved in and bought the young striker to bolster Boro's promotion drive.Armstrong made an immediate impression, scoring six league goals for Middlesbrough in the remainder of the season. In the last few games of the 1997-98 season Armstrong was troubled with a back injury which led to an operation and a long lay-off. He did not appear again in a competitive match until March 20, 1999 when he came on as a substitute.Opportunities after this were restricted to brief appearances coming off the bench, but Armstrong ended the season on a high note, notching his first Premiership goal on April 24, 1999.But mainly because of injuries his appearances were restricted at the Riverside Stadium and the move away from Teesside was almost inevitable. His move to Suffolk witnessed an almost instant change of fortune, with his early days at Ipswich witnessing Armstrong keeping out the poular David Johnson. |
