| Martin O'Neill gambled on Matty Elliott in 1997 but the gamble has paid off handsomely.Elliott was linked with many big clubs, but they were unwilling to risk everything on a defender who had spent all his career in the lower divisions.Leicester took the plunge and have benefited from many committed, physical displays. Elliott is an influential and inspirational player who was called up by Scotland through his grandmother's nationality.He was able to form a strong partnership with Colin Hendry and was rewarded with a trip to France for the 1998 World Cup.After three good seasons he blotted his copy-book after being sent off for Scotland against the Faroe Islands in a Euro 2000 qualifier at the end of the 1998-99 season.But he remained a key piece in the Leicester jig-saw, and his two goals at Wembley took the Worthington Cup to Filbert Street after the Foxes' 2-1 defeat of Tranmere in February, 2000. |
