Nwankwo Kanu
Arsenal
Born: 8/01/76
Hometown: Owerri, Nigeria
Kanu has fitted a great deal into his short career. The Nigerian international won the Champions' League with Ajax in 1995 before helping his country win soccer's Olympic gold medal at Atlanta. In 1996 he was also awarded the prestigious African Player of the Year.Nwankwo was then involved in a big-money deal that took him to Internazionale. A routine medical detected a serious heart defect which required surgery and Kanu's world was in tatters. His footballing career looked to be over before it had really started but he fought his way back to full fitness and showed, when he moved to Arsenal in 1998, that he is a player of immense skill and determination.Used mainly from the subs bench by Arsene Wenger in 1999, Kanu scored a number of exceptional goals that have made him a firm favourite at Highbury. The following season, that witnessed a club versus country row in mid-season, Kanu played more of a leading role in the first team especially in a local derby game against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. He produced a magical performance to help the Gunners come back from 2-0 down and scored an incredible hat-trick in the last quarter of the match that Arsenal won 3-2.The third and final strike followed a marvellous run from the bye-line an an acurate strike from a difficult angle that squezzed past the Chelsea keeper Ed De Goey.
