Marcel Desailly
Chelsea
Born: 9/07/68
Hometown: Accra, Ghana
Born Ghana, Desailly made his name in France with Marseille. He was part of the side that won the European Cup in 1993, but was subsequently stripped of the title. Marcel moved to Milan in 1993 where he appeared in two further European Cup Finals in 1994 and 1995, scoring the final goal in AC Milan’s 4-0 drubbing of Barcelona in 1994.After five success-filled seasons at the San Siro he moved to Stamford Bridge for £4.6million in June 1998, after helping France win the World Cup. His commanding presence at the back has helped Chelsea tighten up their defence and alongside Frank Leboeuf has given the Blues an extra assurance on the ball. Desailly’s distribution is good enough for him to play in midfield as well, a position he often occupied at Milan.Another outstanding domestic season in 1999/2000 on a personal note, was given the perfect send off with Desailly playing his part in the outstanding France team that won Euro 2000 with a 2-1 win against Italy. There was persistent speculation that the consistent French international would be joining Manchester United but Desailly confirmed his allegiance to Chelsea.
