| Berlin-born Christian Ziege began his career at Bayern Munich after being discovered by coach Giovanni Trapattoni.He made rapid progress as a classy attacking full-back who enjoyed going forward at every opportunity.It came as no surprise when he joined AC Milan, and he made a considerable impact in Serie A, despite suffering a series of injuries.He was a member of Germany's Euro 96 winning side, catching the eye of a number of scouts along the way to the final.One of his admirers in England was Middlesbrough boss Bryan Robson, who brought him to The Riverside in July 1999 for £4million. Ziege can play at wing-back or in midfield, and is particularly dangerous down the left side.His move to Anfield in September 2000 was shrouded in controversy. A clause in the players contract allowed Ziege the right to move if an offer of over £5million was received. Liverpool finally paid £5.5million, although Boro boss Bryan Robson had wanted £8million. The transfer was conducted in acrimonious circumstances but was completed with the Anfield faithful immediately taking Ziege to their hearts. |
