| Mark Viduka |
Leeds Born: 10/09/75 Hometown: Melbourne, Australia |
| The transfer of Viduka was an on off situation for several weeks. Not entirely untypical for a player with a chequered past in terms of off-field problems that overshadowed much of his Celtic career which lasted just a year-and-a-half. For quite a long time the Australian born striker has at times been trying to talk himself out of Parkhead constantly hankering for a move to England. His initial transfer for £3.5million to Celtic from Croatia Zagreb was a strange affair. Weeks after he arrived in Scotland Viduka went missing and his time in Scotland has been beset with rumours of a move.Prior to arriving in Scotland Viduka had a trail period at Bradford City when Chris Kamara was in charge at Valley Parade but the Bantams were unable to negotiate a work permit. But the double your money transfer to England has represented a healthy profit for Celtic. And even though Viduka may be considered a wayward character he has tremendous playing qualities and undoubted ability.A big man at 6ft 2in and weighing in at almost 14 stone he has a physical presence that Leeds have been seeking ever since the departure of Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink.A sound touch for a big man he is capable of holding the ball up to good effect and bringing other players into the game. He has excellent awareness in and around the box.In the season 1999/2000 Viduka scored 27 goals in all competitions having made 39 appearances. His first season with Leeds had barely begun before the Australian international was off to the Olympics to represent his country.Initially, this caused some consternation as Viduka stayed on in Australia longer than expected. But all that was soon forgotten as he came back to West Yorkshire and made an immediate impression with his orthodox centre forward play. |
