| Abel Xavier arrived in England as very much an unknown quantity in September 1999. But Walter Smith has once again proved his shrewdness in the transfer market by snapping up the Portuguese international.He quickly settled in the Premiership after his £1.5million move from Dutch giants PSV Eindhoven and is very much in the same mould as one-season wonder Oliver Dacourt. The impressive Dacourt won many admirers during his short spell in the English game and Xavier looks to have the ability to fill the void left by the Frenchman's departure. A defensive midfielder who has excellent passing ability, Xavier could well become a lynchpin in the centre of the park for the Merseyside club. |
