Darren Huckerby
Man City
Born: 4/23/76
Hometown: Nottingham
Leeds bought Darren Huckerby in August 1999 to replace the Spanish-bound Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink.Huckerby had been Gordon Strachan's first signing for Coventry from Newcastle in November 1996.He only made two appearances for the Magpies, both as a substitute, although he cost City £1million.A strong, nippy striker, he has the knack of scoring spectacular goals. The best to date came against the then champions Manchester United in December 1997. The strike was all the better as it was the goal which decided the game.He played more than 100 matches for the Sky Blues and was an important member of the Coventry forward line. He was called up for the England B squad in February 1998 for the game against Chile.Huckerby has been used primarily as a substitute by David O'Leary at Leeds, coming on in the second half to terrorise tiring defences with his speed and direct style of play.To highlight his appearances as a substitute, he came off the bench on 24 occasions during the season 1999/2000 while only making nine starts. But his lack of first team opportunities finally witnessed a move to Manchester City, where he made his debut in a disastrous 4-1 home defeat against Charlton on December 30, although he did notch a penalty for the City goal. Two days later on New Years Day he then created the equalising goal in the 1-1 draw at one of his former clubs Coventry, making a good impression with City fans.
