| The young winger qualified to play for Finland through parentage, and was recommended to Rangers by Finnish coach Richard Moller Nielsen. Signed in 1997 from Estonian side FC Flora, Johansson had to wait until March 1998 before he made his first start, in a goalless Scottish Cup quarter-final against Dundee. The pacy forward again flirted with the first-team in 1998/99, and netted several goals early in the campaign, as new signings failed to settle. His stunning goal against Bayer Leverkusen in the UEFA Cup at Ibrox was one of the best strikes of the season. Derby County bid £1.5 million for Johansson in December 1998, but the winger turned down the move, choosing to continue to fight for his place at Ibrox.However, with a new influx of young strikers, including Kenny Miller and Peter Lovenkrands, being brought to Ibrox by manager Dick Advocaat, Johnsson decided it was eventually time to move on in the summer of 2000Agreed a five year deal with Charlton with the London club paying £3.25 million upfront with another half-a-million based on them remaining in the Premiership. |
