| Luzhny is a right-sided Ukrainian who has enjoyed a long, successful career in his home country. Arsenal signed him in 1999, and, at the age of 31, will feel part of the Gunners' experienced defence.The former USSR and Ukrainian international scored 13 goals in 175 Ukrainian Premier League matches for Dynamo Kiev.Since the break-up of the Soviet Union, Kiev have completely dominated Ukrainian football. Luzhny won six consecutive Championships in the Ukraine between 1993 and 1998 as well as being part of three Cup wins.He made eight appearances for the USSR side between 1989/90 before representing the Ukraine 25 times.Luzhny is fond of getting upfield to join in the attacks, his galloping runs earning him the nickname 'The Horse'.During 1999/2000 his first team opportunities were limited but the veteran defender is considered to be a vital squad member. |
