| Another talented youngster who became only the second 16-year-old in the club's history to play for the first team.In early 1998 Everton took the unprecedented step of signing Jeffers, then an untried trainee, on a £1million contract.Having come through the FA's School of Excellence, Jeffers began to repay Everton's faith in him, by scoring some vital goals towards the end of the 1998/99 season.Jeffers' career was put on hold in 1998 when he was struck by a mysterious heart virus.Fully recovered, the teenager rose in the Everton striking pecking order, above Cadamarteri and Branch, as the player most likely to make it in the big time. He scored a crucial goal in Everton's FA Youth Cup final success against Blackburn Rovers in 1997/98.At the beginning of the season 2000/2001, Jeffers was out injured for several weeks, but he came back with a bang in September and continues to be a future England prospect. |
