| Stephen McPhail signed for Leeds United in December 1996 and made his debut in February 1998 as a substitute against Leicester.The young midfielder had been held back by George Graham, not wanting to rush the talented player into first-team football too soon, and it was left to David O'Leary to give him his first full start at Forest.Only three days after this, such was the faith O'Leary and Eddie Gray had in McPhail that he was selected to play against Roma in the UEFA Cup in the Olympic Stadium in Rome.McPhail is one of several talented youngsters who have committed themselves to Leeds long-term in signing a new five-year contract in May 1999.Since then he has made an increasing impact in the Premiership with his slick passing and sharp football brain. |
