| Hamilton Ricard arrived at the Riverside in March 1998 as an unknown quantity from Colombia. He played in every game from his arrival to the end of Boro's successful promotion season.At the start of the 1998-99 season a lot rested on Ricard as Alun Armstrong was side-lined for much of the season and Paul Merson soon departed to Aston Villa.The tall, strong striker was up to the challenge, and he soon started hitting the back of the net in a useful partnership with Mikkel Beck. He ended the season with 15 Premiership goals from 32 starts. Not only did he win over the Boro faithful, with his spectacular performances and at times unpredictable tricks, but he secured a place in the Colombian team for the 1999 Copa America.The competition for places reached fever pitch when Alen Boksic was signed in the summer 2000, and Ricard was often left on the bench the following season. |
