| Emerson was given his chance in English football when he was signed by Ron Atkinson for Sheffield Wednesday on a Bosman free in 1998. He was largely unknown when he moved to England, but 'The Wall' soon established himself as a class act. He was an ever present in 1998/99 forming a resilient central defensive partnership with Des Walker. Thome still dreams of representing Brazil, although international recognition has so far eluded him. But a high profile switch to London glamour club Chelsea in December 1999 may help Thome realise his ambitions. A shock swoop by Gianluca Vialli allowed the likeable Brazilian to test his abilities at the highest level in the Champions' League.To highlight just how fortunes can change, Thome was actually offered to Huddersfield Town before he joined the Owls back in 1998. He was very much a part of the Chelsea squad and during the 1999/2000 term he played 43 games in league and cup matches for Chelsea.But, following a shock midweek August defeat at Bradford in season 2000/2001, the Chelsea defender was one of the scapegoats of an unexpected defeat and he was subsequently transfered to Sunderland. |
