| Villa unearthed a gem in this classy central defender who made two apearances late in season 1997/98. A former skipper of the club's youth team, Gareth took the step up to the Premiership in his stride at the beginning of 1998/99. Widely tipped as a future permanent fixture in the full England side, he made his Under-21 bow against the Czech Republic in November 1998.Previously on schoolboy terms with Brighton, Villa were ordered to pay £1million compensation to the Seasiders after Gareth burst onto the big time. A composed, and already accomplished centre-back, he is also not out of his depth in midfield, where his touch and vision come into their own. An outstanding first full season saw Gareth impressive in Villa's top-of-the-table start to the campaign and a new five-year contract was a welcome present on his birthday in February 1999.During the 1999/2000 season Gareth became a part of the England set-up and made international appearances on a couple of occasions in the friendlies against Malta and Ukraine. |
