Danny Mills
Leeds
Born: 5/18/77
Hometown: Northwich
Danny Mills became David O'Leary's third signing on June 15, 1999 for £4.1million from Charlton Athletic in a bid to ease United's problems at right-back.Mills began his career with Norwich City, where he made excellent progress. He caught the eye of Alan Curbishley at Charlton and joined them for £350,000 in March 1998.He was influential in the promotion of the Addicks to the Premiership, with a memorable performance in the play-off final against Sunderland, which Charlton won on penalties.Charlton's season in the Premiership proved to be a struggle, but Mills distinguished himself as a player with speed, good tackling and battling qualities. He was so impressive at The Valley that Peter Taylor included him in his England Under-21 squad to play against Sweden at Huddersfield in June 1998, and he gained inclusion to the full England squad two days later owing to a much-depleted regular squad. When it became clear that Charlton were heading back to division one, speculation mounted as to where Mills would be playing his football the following season.O'Leary admitted that he had been on Mills' trail for six months, and he was delighted when the highly-rated full-back agreed a move to Elland Road.Although during his early days with Leeds Mills was largely on the sidelines, he was given the opportunity of regular first team football due to a massive injury crisis at Elland Road in the opening three months of the 2000/2001 season.
