| Jonathan Woodgate |
Leeds Born: 1/22/80 Hometown: Middlesbrough |
| Jonathan Woodgate was earmarked for great things by George Graham, but it was David O'Leary, acting as caretaker-manager, who gave the classy but dominant defender a chance to shine on his debut at Nottingham Forest. That was the beginning of his sensational first season for Leeds in 1998-99. The campaign finished on a high for Woodgate when he was called up for England's senior squad at the age of 19 and played in the 1-1 draw against Bulgaria in the Euro 2000 qualifier in June.Woodgate first signed for Leeds as a 13-year-old schoolboy, playing in a midfield role then reverting to centre-half in the youth squad that won the FA Youth Cup in 1997.In 1998 he made his debut for the England Under-18 team, going on to captain the side. His progress continued apace in the 1999-2000 season, when he forged a formidable central defensive partnership with Lucas Radebe. |
