Alan Smith
Leeds
Born: 10/28/80
Hometown: Rothwell
Local lad Alan Smith, born in Rothwell and a lifelong Leeds fan, made his dream debut just three weeks after his 18th birthday when he scored with his first touch at senior level at Anfield to bring United level, before going on to win 3-1.This was the start of good times ahead for the youngster, as he became the first choice partner for Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, scoring nine goals in only 16 starts.Such was the promise shown by the striker, Leeds rewarded him with a lucrative five-year contract in May 1999.At the age of 10, Smith joined Leeds' Centre of Excellence before going on to the National Centre of Excellence at Lilleshall, where he represented England at Under-16 level. He was next selected by Howard Wilkinson for the England Under-18 squad, and was due to play for England in a Youth tournament in Israel when fears over violence in the Middle East caused the tour to be cancelled. This turned out to be a stroke of good fortune as it was to be played on the same weekend the youngster made his memorable debut.Smith is one of a handful of promising youngsters coming through the youth policy set up by by Howard Wilkinson, with David O'Leary believing in letting talent do the talking rather than experience.Smith found life harder in his second season, but his progress continued in a developing Leeds outfit.None more so than during the 2000/2001 season when early season goals and good form led to an England call up for the international friendly against France.
