| Steven Gerrard's no-nonsense midfield play earned him a place in the Liverpool first team against Spurs in December 1998.He had earlier impressed in the reserves after joining Liverpool as a trainee. One of his chief assets is his ability to win the ball in midfield, but he has added much more to his game.He quickly adjusted to the pace and pressures of the Premiership, and has earned a reputation as a capable man-marker when required.His progress was confirmed when he won the 'Man of the Match' award in a UEFA Cup game against Celta Vigo at Anfield.He gained further recognition when he was invited to train with Kevin Keegan's England team in March 1999.His only setback was a suspected stress fracture in his back, but he was given the all-clear after a series of tests and he remains an important piece in the Anfield jigsaw.He put in some impressive displays during 1999-2000 which caught the eye of England manager Kevin Keegan.Gerrard made his England debut against Ukraine in May 2000 and took part in Euro 2000, and he looks to have a promising international future, having already achieved universal recognition. |
