| Andy Goram |
Motherwell Born: 4/13/64 Hometown: Bury |
| The English-born goalkeeper became a legend with both Rangers and Scotland. Began his career with Oldham in 1981 before joining Hiberian in 1987. In his time at Easter Road, Goram made 138 League appearances, and amazingly scored one goal, on the final day of season in 1988 against Morton, direct from a drop-kick clearance. Having become established as Scotland's deputy to Jim Leighton, it was no suprise that Goram was tempted to Ibrox in 1991, and he became the solid foundation of their era of back-to-back championships, while also becoming first-choice for the Interational side. Off -field troubles, which led to adverse publicity in the Scottish tabloids led to his departature in June 1998, and when he walked out of the Scotland squad prior to the World Cup in France, his International and club career seemed over. Short spells at Notts County and Sheffield Utd followed, as he attempted to pick up the pieces, and in January 1999, Goram was given a lifeline by Motherwell boss Billy Davies and has shown that he remains the best shot-stopper in the business. A keen cricketer, he has been capped by Scotland, and has faced the bowling of Merv Hughes, and survived to tell the tale. |
