| Has already established himself a place in Southampton folklore after scoring both goals against Everton in a 2-0 win on the final day of season 1998/99 to ensure the club's Premiership survival.After a lengthy battle with beaurocracy, Marian became the first Latvian to play in the top flight. The Saints fought desperately to gain a work permit for the striker, who although being signed in February '99, had to wait until April for his first outing.Pahars had previously scored 51 goals in Latvia's top league and has been described as the country's answer to Michael Owen. He was named best midfielder of the year in 1997 and best striker in 1998, already amassing a significant number of international caps at a still tender age.Pahars has settled well and has proved to be another exciting unknown quantity down at The Dell, like Eyal Berkovic and Hassan Kachloul before him. He was the Saints leading scorer for the 1999/2000 season with 13 goals and that tally was achieved in just 31 league appearances. |
