Paul Merson
Aston Villa
Born: 3/20/68
Hometown: Harlesden
Did magnificently to overcome his much-publicised battle against drink, drugs and gambling as the hearts of the nation went out to his plight. Having enjoyed massive success as a precocious, unpredictable talent at Arsenal over a ten-year period, Paul made a surprise move to Middlesbrough in the summer of 1997. His promise of establishing Boro in the Premiership became a reality as Merse was dubbed the "Magic Man" with some enchanting performances in the middle of the park and a Player of the Year award. Paul’s season was complete as he earned inclusion in the World Cup squad for France 98, scoring a penalty in the shoot-out defeat by Argentina.Having become increasingly unsettled on Teeside and fearing a relapse, Paul moved to Villa Park as part of John Gregory’s big-spending revolution. An impressive start to his Villa career was curtailed by a persistent, long standing back problem. Despite a relatively successful season during 1999/2000, Merson continued to be at the centre of transfer speculation. And during the following summer he was being linked with a move back to his favoured London with Wimbledon looking to pin their hopes of a quick return to the Premiership by targeting the former Arsenal man.
