| A ball-winning midfielder Parlour made the move from being a good squad player to a vital part of the Arsenal machine in 1997/98 with some breathtaking performances.He was unlucky not to break into the England squad for France 98, but despite a slight downturn in form during 1998/99 he belatedly received his England call-up.Parlour scored on his Arsenal debut against Sheffield Wednesday in 1992 and soon began to show he was a hard-working, hard-tackling midfielder who was a good passer of the ball.His breakthrough into a regular first-teamer coincided with a new-found ability to score vital goals - always a key asset.Parlour had been linked with a move to West Ham in 1997, but a return to form since then has made Arsene Wenger re-assess the Romford-born player's value to the side.His performances during 1999/2000 were typically all-action but also extremely consistent and the England midfielder arguably had his best ever season, in terms of personal form, while in an Arsenal shirt. |
