| New Zealander Danny Hay first attracted manager David O'Leary's attention during a trip Down Under.Following a brief trial with VFB Stuttgart, O'Leary watched the 6ft 3in defender on video and in August 1999 brought him to Elland Road in a £200,000 deal with Perth Glory.Hay had earlier joined United on a pre-season Scandinavian tour, during which he did enough to impress the Leeds staff. His strength in the air and physical presence are obvious qualities, but he faced stiff competition to break into the first team. |
