Dietmar Hamann
Liverpool
Born: 8/27/73
Hometown: Waldasson, Bavaria
Dietmar Hamann eventually joined the club during the 1998 close season after establishing himself in the German World Cup team, playing in all five of his country's matches.A defensive midfielder, was encouraged to push forward at Newcastle under Ruud Gullit, scoring five times in 30 starts during the 1998-99 season. He had arrived from Bayern Munich having turned down the chance of Champions' League football to go to Tyneside.Ultimately his season ended in frustration with defeat in the FA Cup final where he was substituted at half time.In the summer of 1999 Hamann expressed his desire to leave St James' Park after just 12 months, and having being linked with moves to Arsenal and Borussia Dortmund, the German finally secured an £8million move to Liverpool where he was seen as the ideal replacement for the departing Paul Ince. His early days at Anfield were beset with injury problems, but once Hamann recovered his fitness, his end of season form was excellent. He was also the man that broke the hearts of England fans and was the last person to ever score a goal at Wembley. His 20-yard free-kick on Saturday October 7 gave Germany a 1-0 win against England in a World Cup qualifier, that also witnessed the resignation of Kevin Keegan immediately after the match.
