| Five foot six and ten stone of competitive footballer and blue touch paper temperament. Dennis orchestrates the Chelsea midfield and many of their delightful passing passages of play flow through their diminutive captain. He seems so calm and elegant when he is on the ball but then minutes later he can see red as his combative nature takes him across the divide between fair and foul play. And when there is a skirmish between other players Dennis is usually first on the spot. Not, as you might guess, to act as a peacemaker. A founder member of Wimbledon's crazy gang before making the short move across London to Chelsea where he has become established and adored by Bridge regulars. Won 12 caps for England in the early nineties. At 32 years-old he is reaching the twilight of his career. Signed a pre-season contract in 1999 with Chelsea to end his playing days at Stamford Bridge.As for his England career, well he was back in the fold with Kevin Keegan, the national manager, and Wise travelled to Euro 2000 with his country. |
