George Boateng
Aston Villa
Born: 9/05/75
Hometown: Nkawkaw, Ghana
A former captain of the Dutch Under-21 side, Boateng chose to come to England and Coventry above Serie A and Spain. He was approaching the end of his contract with Feyenoord, so Coventry City were able to pick him up for £250,000. Versatile enough to play in either defence or midfield, he prefers to play in the middle of the park. He is a complete competitor and has the skill, pace and will to win, which saw him linked with moves away from Highfield Road. He was sent off in his second appearance for the Midlands side, but he is a player whose commitment cannot be questioned. Aston Villa snapped up the Dutchman in a £4.5million deal in July 1999 after he had impressed Villa boss John Gregory with a two-goal display in a 4-1 win at Villa Park in February 1999.Although his early days at Villa were difficult Boateng eventually established himself in the first team but his season was not without incident. On February 14 against Middlesbrough at the Riverside Stadium the tough midfielder played his part in a tremendous 4-1 win but he was also the victim of a clumsy challenge from Paul Gascoigne.Despite Gascoigne's arm colliding with the Villa players' head it was the former England man who came off worst with a broken arm!And that was Gazza's last game for 'Boro before his close season transfer to Everton.
