| Hughes joined the Toffees in March 2000 after finally accepting that his future lay away from Highbury.A midfielder with bags of potential, he spent his time at Arsenal on the fringes of the first team without really establishing himself at the club.This was confirmed by Arsene Wenger's willingness to release him on loan to Fulham at the start of the 1999/2000 season.Confident on the ball and full of energy, Hughes favours a central midfield or left-sided position. But with Emmanuel Petit and Patrick Viera automatic choices at Highbury, and Marc Overmars so important to the Gunners' style of play the youngster was reliant on injuries or suspensions to get his chance to impress.He will no doubt be given that chance more frequently at Goodison Park as he looks to build on the England Under-21 caps he picked up earlier in his career. |
