Gary McAllister
Liverpool
Born: 12/25/64
Hometown: Motherwell
Gary McAllister was Coventry City's record signing when he joined the Sky Blues from Leeds United in 1996 although that move was shrouded in controversy.Having just won the Championship with the West Yorkshire club, many viewed him as the mastermind behind that success and the clubs supporters were angry that he left the following summer in a £3million move to Coventry.During his time at Highfield Road there have been numerous injury problems highlighted by a terrible run of bad luck in the 1997/98 season that ended with the Scotland international missing France '98.International success took a back seat as McAllister retired from playing for Scotland after becoming a target for abuse from a certain section of Scottish fans. The following autumn after the World Cup the influential midfielder was back in league action and was back to his best to help City retain their Premiership status. The season 1999/2000 was one of McAllister's finest in his long career as he played 43 games for Gordon Strachan's men and scored 13 goals with a number of outstanding performances from the centre of midfield.Liverpool manager Gerard Houllier stepped in early to capture the out of contract player on a free transfer under the Bosman ruling in the close season of 2000 to end months of speculation surrounding the long term future of McAllister. He has signed a one-year deal that will keep him at Anfield until 2001.
