Julian Joachim
Aston Villa
Born: 9/20/74
Hometown: Boston
The diminutive striker with astonishing pace, burst onto the scene as an 18-year-old at first club Leicester after impressing with his dynamic performances in the England Youth team. A regular goalscorer in his early years at Filbert Street, boss Brian Little took Julian with him to Aston Villa in 1996. Despite scoring on his full debut against Blackburn in a 2-0 win, the pocket dynamo found himself slipping down the striking pecking order at Villa Park. The arrival of new boss John Gregory and the demise of Stan Collymore saw an upchange in fortunes for Joachim as he finished off season 1997/98 with eight goals from 18 starts. An explosive start to 1998/99 saw Julian a virtual ever-present in the side that led the table for much of the campaign, as he finished the season as top scorer with 14 Premiership goals, whilst being voted the club’s Player of the Year. Although season 1999/2000 was less productive in terms of goals scored, the speedy striker was once again a virtual ever-present.But during the following summer a fall out with manager John Gregory led to the former Leicester man criticising his boss by saying that promises made to him had not been kept. After those comments, a move away from Villa Park became a virtual certainty.
