Robbie Fowler
Liverpool
Born: 4/09/75
Hometown: Liverpool
The man even the Liverpool players refer to as 'God' is one of English football's greatest natural-born goalscorers of recent years.Even before his elevation to the lofty heights of the first team, the name Robbie Fowler was widely known in football circles.Indeed he wasted little time in living up to all the hype to establish himself as the new Anfield goal-hero following the departure of legend Ian Rush. The goals flowed and the accolades followed. After just a couple of seasons his CV was mightily impressive. Hat-tricks, five-goal shows, England Under-21 recognition, a PFA Young Player of the Year award and a full international call-up, before injuries and off-field problems intervened.A cruciate knee injury in 1998 saw Fowler's World Cup France 98 dreams dashed but he returned ahead of schedule to finish season 1998-99 with 18 goals in 31 appearances. The season ended on a sour note as Fowler's much-publicised run-ins with officialdom led to a lengthy ban, but both the club and Kevin Keegan's new England kept faith.A new contract was secured at Anfield and Fowler led the line in a disappointing 1-1 draw in a Euro 2000 qualifier in Bulgaria in June 1999.Since then he has again been troubled by a niggling and persistent ankle injury, but Fowler remains one of the hottest properties in football.
