Man Utd Born: 8/10/71 Hometown: Cork |
| Looking for the perfect all-round midfield player? One with bottomless stamina, ball-winning skills and an inspirational leader?Well, look no further. Described by manager Sir Alex Ferguson as having a "Rolls Royce engine" and by the respected Italian coach Marcello Lippi as the "heartbeat" of Manchester United, Roy Keane is undeniably one of the great modern day midfield players.Since his arrival at Old Trafford from Nottingham Forest in 1993 for a then record £3.75million, the Cork-born Irishman has consistently performed to a high level. He suffered cruciate knee ligament damage in a Premiership match at Leeds in September 1997 which required lengthy rehabilitation and which Keane described as "The biggest challenge of my life."He returned to the United side for the 1998-99 season and led his team to the treble of Premiership, FA Cup and European Cup.His good form continued in the 1999-2000 season. He is a permanent fixture in the Republic of Ireland international side.United broke their wage structure during the 1999/2000 season to tie Keane to a five-year deal that was reportedly worth £50,000 per week. Although there was huge interest from abroad, the ever popular midfielder decided to tie himself to the club long-term. |
