| The capture of the German central defender in June 2000 on a free transfer under the Bosman rule was a major coup for Liverpool with the Bayern Munich player signing a contract until June 2004.A tall and dominant centre-half Babbel can also operate as a man-marker or right back and is a vastly experienced campaigner.He made his international debut in 1995 against Spain and has been a regular in the Germany set up ever since with the highlight for his country being an appearance in the Euro 96 final win in England over the Czech Republic.The Euro 2000 competition in Belgium was less auspicious with two appearances against Romania and England ending in a draw and defeat respectively.Through injury he missed the third and last humiliating 3-0 defeat against Portugal that finally ended Germany's run in the summer competition.At club level Babbel has had two spells with Bayern Munich and has been a consistent performer in his club's success. |
