Jim Magilton
Ipswich
Born: 5/06/69
Hometown: Belfast
A Northern Ireland international Magilton is the ideal type of midfielder with an ability to dominate play in the centre of the park as well as having a knack for scoring vital goals.During the 1999/2000 promotion campaign, when Town went into the Premiership via the Wembley play-off final, Magilton was masterful in the midfield and his vast experience was invaluable as George Burley's men reached those vital stages of the play-offs.The hat-trick he completed in the play off semi final 5-3 win against Bolton will long stay in the memories of Ipswich supporters.Magilton had scored a last-minute equaliser to take the game to extra-time having made it 3-3 on the night and 5-5 on aggregate. He then went on to complete his never-to-be-forgotten trio of strikes to take Ipswich to the Wembley play off final. He began his career at Liverpool but spent almost five fruitless years at Anfield without making a league appearance before moving to Oxford United in 1991 for what turned out to be a bargain £100,000.Three years later Oxford acquired more than six times their initial outlay by selling him to Southampton but David Pleat eventually paid £1,600,000 to take the player from the Saints to Sheffield Wednesday where for a short time Magilton was skipper.Unfortunately for the Owls and the player he made less than 30 appearances at Hillsborough but has resurrected his career at Portman Road and become a firm favourite with the Town fans.
