| Vegard Heggem |
Liverpool Born: 7/13/75 Hometown: Trondheim, Norway |
| This skilful, attack-minded right-sided player is equally at home in the right-back berth, right wing-back or even in wide midfield.Vegard Heggem loves getting forward to link with midfield and attack, and his £3.5million arrival at Anfield in the summer of 1998 signalled the end of Jason McAteer's Liverpool career. The Norwegian international saw his move to Merseyside as an atonement for his World Cup France 98 disappointment when he was forced to withdraw following a groin injury.Season 1998-99 proved to be a mixture of highs and lows for the Scandinavian. He quickly established himself as a favourite with the Anfield crowd with his surging runs forward and quality delivery into the danger areas, but shared in the disappointment of one of the most inconsistent seasons in recent Liverpool history. The following term Heggem played just 10 league games but that was more down to the system than any lack of ability. An ideal wingback the Norway star did begin the 2000/2001 season with a couple of first team appearances and was chosen for his country in the autumn World Cup qualifiers. Although he isn't best suited to playing in a flat back four Heggem has attacking talent in abundance and would be ideal in a five-man defence. |
