| Nigel Martyn |
Leeds Born: 8/11/66 Hometown: St. Austell |
| Nigel Martyn joined Leeds in the summer of 1996 from Crystal Palace, fighting off attention from Everton, with United ending up paying a then record fee for a goalkeeper of £2.25million.He had been with the club for only two months when George Graham took the reins from Howard Wilkinson, but his first season proved to be outstanding, keeping Leeds in the Premiership, with 23 clean sheets in 44 appearances and on the way collecting the club's Player of the Year award. His prowess in goal for Leeds, showing a safe pair of hands, has upped his rating as undoubtedly one of the top shot-stoppers in the country.By 1998, Nigel had regained his place in the England squad, and travelled to the World Cup finals in France 98 as understudy to first choice David Seaman.Despite an outstanding season for his club in 1999/2000, Martyn was still not first choice for England, although he did replace Seaman during the brief Euro 2000 campaign, after the Arsenal keeper was injured. |
