Lee Dixon
Arsenal
Born: 3/17/64
Hometown: Manchester
For a player who has reached the pinnacle in domestic football it is interesting to note that Dixon was twice given a free transfer during the early part of his career. Both Burnley and Chester City gave the future England international away, and Bury were little better, selling Dixon to Stoke in 1986 for a paltry £40,000.Lee's career took off at the Victoria Ground and his value had multiplied by ten when Arsenal bought him 18 months later.A virtual ever-present in the Arsenal back-four since 1988, Dixon earned 21 international caps between 1989 and 1993. He was given a surprise recall by Howard Wilkinson for the ill-fated England friendly with France in 1999.Despite reaching the veteran stage and having had his testimonial season with the Gunners, Dixon remains fit and enthusiastic and is likely to stay in Arsene Wenger's plans.Although he lost his left-sided full-back partner Nigel Winterburn, who was sold to West Ham, Dixon appears to remain in the frame to retain his right-back spot for the 2000/2001 season.
