| The long serving Gunners left-back finally left Highbury after three-years of speculation that his defensive berth would be taken.In 1997 there were strong links with Graeme Le Saux the Chelsea defender who was then at Blackburn Rovers. But Winterburn survived to be a virtual ever present the following season but during the 1999/2000 season he lost his first team place to Brazilian star Silvinho.After almost 13 years with Arsenal the former member of Wimbledon's Crazy Gang joined the Hammers in the summer of June 2000 receiving a two-year contract.Winterburn is a tough tackling defender rugged with his challenges but equally deft with his passing.He is recognised as one of the best passers of a ball down the channels and is an assured and cool customer in the orthodox left back position.He also has an ability to throw the ball a long way from a throw in and has long been thought of as very unlucky not to have gained more than his two England caps. |
