| Michael Bridges |
Leeds Born: 8/05/78 Hometown: Whitley Bay |
| Michael Bridges is a highly rated young striker who played a key role in Sunderland's promotion campaigns in 1996 and 1999.His career was briefly halted by a groin injury in the 1997/98 season which restricted his number of appearances to nine. When fully recovered he was unable to displace Niall Quinn and Kevin Phillips, who were forging such a successful partnership up-front for Sunderland.Bridges has pace and skill to spare, and the ability to hold the ball up for others to support. He has represented England at Under-21 level.Transfer speculation regarding Bridges was rife during the 1999 close season and he was linked to Leeds, Spurs and Aston Villa. After rejecting an offer to join Tottenham, the youngster finally put pen to paper on a deal which took him to Leeds for £5million in July 1999.He settled quickly and his goals helped Leeds towards the top of the Premiership, establishing him as a favourite with the Elland Road faithful.Although Bridges was the clubs leading scorer for the season 1999/2000 with 21 goals in total, his early season form the term after, saw him left out of the side during the early part of the season. |
