| The embodiment of Arsenal in the 1990's. Solid, dependable and successful, Adams has been the Gunners' captain and inspiration for most of the decade. An outstanding defender who has been an inspirational figure for club and country.Adams has been Arsenal's captain since March 1988 and is the most successful skipper in the club's illustrious history.He has lifted more trophies than any other Arsenal captain, and become a fixture in the England side.A well publicised battle against alcoholism and a spell in prison after a drink-driving incident have disrupted Adams' career.In an era when loyalty is scarce, Tony has remained loyal to the Gunners since making his debut against Sunderland in 1983 and has appeared in almost 500 League games for the club.Although Adams is renowned for his consistency for England as well as Arsenal, Euro 2000 wasn't exactly a personal triumph for the inspirational central defender.He was replaced by teammate Martin Keown during the competition because of injury, but there will be few that can argue Adams is one of the games most respected defenders ever to represent his country. |
