Harry Kewell
Leeds
Born: 9/22/78
Hometown: Smithfield, Sydney
Harry Kewell joined Leeds in December 1995 from the New South Wales Soccer Academy and soon became a hit with the fans as he showed his electrifying pace down the left wing, plenty of ability, and an eye for goal.He played his first game for Leeds at the age of 17 against Middlesbrough on March 30, 1996 as a substitute under Howard Wilkinson. When George Graham took over the following season he concentrated in keeping Leeds in the Premiership and kept with the more experienced players rather than give youth a chance. Kewell only appeared once as a substitute. When a pre-season injury ruled Lee Sharpe out of the 1997-98 season it gave United's Wizard of Oz the opportunity to prove his worth and display his immense talent.Kewell scored his first goal for Leeds in a Coca-Cola Cup third round replay against Stoke, ending his first season with eight goals in 32 appearances. The Aussie replaced Rod Wallace as Hasselbaink's strike partner for season 1998-99 and increased his goal tally to nine in 50 appearances. He agreed a four-year extension to his contract in the spring of 1999 which is sure to keep the Elland Road faithful chanting his name.A full Australian international, he made his full debut against Chile in 1996. Due to his English parentage, Kewell was eligible to play for England, but says: "There was never any doubt. My country is Australia."He established himself as one of the most potent and entertaining players in the Premiership during 1999-2000.His pace, crossing ability and eye for goal make him one of the first names to go on David O'Leary's team-sheet - and on the shopping list of a growing number of clubs throughout Europe.Unfortunately for both player and the club, Kewell suffered an Achilles injury the following season, that meant a six-month absence.Apart from missing domestic matches, Kewell also lost out on travelling home for the Australian Olympics, where he would have represented his country.
