| Republic of Ireland international Steve Staunton returned to Anfield under the Bosman ruling during the 1998 close season, after seven years with Aston Villa.A scorer of some spectacular goals during his career, the left-sided defender is a consistent performer at the highest level having represented his country in two World Cup Finals in 1990 and 1994.His excellent positional sense, combined with his deep crosses and fierce tackling, makes him an exceptional asset.Since his return to Liverpool the deficiencies in a regularly exposed defence have not reflected well on any of the players and Staunton, among others, looked to tighten things up under French manager Gerard Houllier.Staunton was given a free transfer by Houllier in October 2000 with the choice of several clubs. |
